  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

We just returned from the movie, "Wedding Crashers". It is really stupid and tons of fun. Thanks for recommending Juan Cole. I have never heard of Josh Ritter but he sounds interesting. Alix and I will be in Elmhurst Thursday evening, late. We will call you from the road as we are getting close. I have to pick up your father from the downtown airport at 2:30 Friday and that evening we are going to a bar with other people from my HS class. Plan on eating Greek on Sat. afternoon or maybe Sun. afternoon. I will talk to you later. Love, M
